Alternative Ideas for Bug-Out Locations
Whether you are a dedicated prepper/survivalist or not, it’s actually a good idea to have a secondary refuge apart from your present abode. If anything happens to your present residence, you have somewhere to go. You can let a friend or family member stay there if you don’t have the room. At the least, you have a personal asylum where you can get away from your regular routine.
There are the more conventional refuges that preppers and non-preppers have such as log houses, RVs, boats, and the like. I’d like to suggest a few other possible bug-out locations that you could consider. Take note that some setup and assembly may be required of some of them, but I’m not going to offer solutions that will break the bank.
Trucks or Buses
Contents
Trucks and buses are very feasible bug-out locations, mainly because they are mobile. Some second-hand trucks and buses are even more affordable than RVs and can be repurposed to become living quarters.
Don’t just buy any truck you see rotting in somebody’s backyard; have a mechanic handy to inspect the vehicle and determine if they’re still in good shape, most especially the engine and the electricals.
Caves
If you manage to find a cave, make certain that it isn’t inhabited by dangerous critters (or other people, for that matter). Making multiple trips, gradually bring in your emergency supplies and household comforts, though not too many.
Some caves go deep; be sure to have lockable gates on all entrances into the main bug-out area within. You don’t want any nasty surprises to come into your refuge.
Religious Buildings
It won’t matter from what system of belief or congregation you come from or adhere to. The buildings that housed these faith organizations will be put to better use as veritable forts, able to house an entire neighborhood of survivors. Generally, they are also of sturdier construction than most houses.
Cemeteries
Places, where the dead are laid to rest, aren’t the first venues for people trying to seek refuge from a global disaster. If you’re more wary of people than most, then it would be the best place to set up your refuge.
One potential issue with this is that aside from shelter in one of the larger mausoleums, there’s little else to scavenge in the area. You will have to bring plenty of supplies with you or forage for them elsewhere.
Junkyards
With all the parts available in junkyards, it would be most wise to settle near or live within one. Creating barricades would not be a problem, either. Have I mention that Just watch out, others might have the same idea…
Winery or Beer Brewery
The reason is obvious.
